Two Questions

#1 Post by lockpicklogic »

I'm not sure where to ask these questions, so feel free to move them.
Okay, so first up, I'm not sure if there is a way to second posts other than replying and saying "I second X". I apologise if this has already been answered elsewhere. Anyway, my reasoning basically follows the lines of; If person A creates a VN and asks for feedback, if person B responds with a particular answer, and then I play the game & read the and the reply, and was going to answer in the same way, what should I do? the answer I agree with has already been posted, so they already have that input, and reading two very similar posts would be a waste of time for person A. But, as someone who hopes to finish a VN someday, if I was asking for feedback on one aspect of it, I would want as many responses as possible to get an idea of the popularity of certain concepts, yet I still wouldn't want to read lots of long posts repeating the same advice (I wouldn't mind repeated encouragement though :) ).
Second... this is going to sound really naive  , but I can't find where in my UCP I alter my signature  ... so... please help.

Thank you in advance :)

From my experience people would generally rather hear similar feedback than have someone say that they second something someone else said and that's it :]. And I'd also say many would prefer similar feedback over nothing at all. That won't be true for everyone or every situation, but think a good amount of the time they'll appreciate something more expansive than 'seconded'.

If you know someone else commented in a similar way you can point that out and say something along the lines of 'like <insert person>, I think that...'. It's helpful to know if more people all have the same problem, but it's also nice to see they took the time to write what they were thinking in their own words. And it doesn't have to be super long, even just a sentence or two of your own thoughts would be nice C:.

As for the other question, to find where you edit your sig you click the 'User Control Panel' button, then the 'Profile' button, and from there you hit the 'Edit signature' button. However, you might have to have a certain amount of posts before you can change your sig. So if you don't see the edit sig button that could be why.

Thank you so much!
Edit: I think you were right and I can see the 'Edit Signature' button now.

In the user control panel there's an "edit signature" option listed on the left.

As for seconding posts, there's no way to do it with the forum's software. On this forum it's discouraged to make posts just saying "I agree" without adding anything else since LSF's purpose is to encourage discussion.

On a related note I've been on forums where there was an option to give a thumbs up to others' posts and it listed who gave the thumbs up beneath the post. It was good in the sense that informative posts got thumbed up by a lot of people and let you know what might be worth reading if you're skimming the thread. Also, it let you know how popular a particular view was which gave you perspective. A lot of time people read threads and agree with things but say nothing making it appear that less people agree with a particular stance. I think it's valuable to highlight posts which the author has said something informative in.

The problem with that, aside from the fact that popular opinions are not always correct opinions, is that it sort of became a popularity contest in practice. Who can make the first funny post which gets the most thumbs up? It shifts the focus from useful discussion to a competitive mindset.

Some parts of Reddit seem to do fine with this post voting though. I kind of like Slashdot's voting where posts can be scored as "insightful", "funny", etc. I don't visit either site enough to know how well they work though.

So that's my long post. (Edit: so long that I got beaten to the punch!)

Hello Tempus,
Thank you for taking the time to respond :)
With relation to the signature, I could've sworn it wasn't there before! It was largely out of curiosity after seeing some interesting sig's, but I checked repeatedly!
I guess I'll be following Googaboga's advice then
many would prefer similar feedback over nothing at all
