MMMORPG

#1 Post by M12 » Tue Jan 08, 2008 7:35 am

As we know, MMORPGs are popular amongst gamers nowadays. I am very interested in game design, but unfortunately, I haven't played any MMOs. I'm looking for a free MMORPG to play right now. Would anyone be interested in joining? We can start a lemmasoft guild, or something =D. I just want to get together with some friends, and see what a MMORPG is like =).

Thanks everyone.

I ahve played FLYFF on and of for some time. It's really the only free MMORPG I've tried and know so far.

I seem to recall Runescape is free. I couldn't vouch for how good it is, nor do I have the time to play it; I only know of it at all 'cause an old uni friend works for Jagex.

Thanks for the replies. That's cool, Vatina. Although I'm hoping to start a new game together. After all, I'm going to be a total noob ^_^;...

No problem if you have no time, Jake. I'll probably just play a tiny bit a day, too.

Thanks. Looking forward to more replies.

I'm a complete noob at Flyff as well, in spite of how long I have had an account there :P I haven't played it a lot since it's boring when you don't know anyone in there... (I'm only lvl 26)
I could always make a new character for it anyway ^^ (Also to make sure that everyone is on the same server)

Oh really? Purely out of interest, who? I have a few friends at Jagex (being based in Cambridge as I am). There's some significant overlap with Sweatdrop Studios, the UK manga studios that SunKitten's with :)

A few of my friends at ToothyWiki recommend Anarchy Online, and have put together a three-part Getting Started guide.
I released 3 VNs, many moons ago: Elven Relations (IntRenAiMo 2007), When I Rule The World (NaNoRenO 2005), and Cloud Fairy (the Cute Light & Fluffy Project, 2009).
More recently I designed the board game Steam Works (published in 2015), available from a local gaming store near you!

I know a lot of free MMORPGS, but the only one I currently play is Trickster Online. Unlike most other mmorpgs it's in 2-d. Also, the characters are (my opinion) really cute. Leveling speed is decent and as far I can remember there are always events going on.

Others I know about are:
RF online - 3-d sci-fi but with a LOT of botters so I don't recommend it
Flyff - 3-d, very cash shop focused  , few events. Decent though, and you can fly.
Fiesta - 3-d, very slow leveling. Decent looks but.. I don't really like it because there's not much to do.
Secret of the Solstice - Ragnarok online clone, 2-d, decent looks but gameplay seems heavily party reliant
Tales of Pirates - 3-d, pretty nice game, you can get your own ship or just stick to the land.
Nostale - 3-d, focuses a lot on pets, you can have one pet and one other npc fighting together with you at a time.
Dream of mirror online - job system that allows you to change class whenever you like on the same character, 3-d "cel-shaded".
Maplestory - 2d, infamous for it's REALLY SLOW leveling.
Rappelz - 3d, very laggy for many people, nice systems but the lag ruined it for me.

Then there Planeshift. It's not really like regular mmorpgs as it's a project to create a game for roleplayers. I played it for a while but sadly my computer's graphics card is too bad to keep up with the current version. There's not too much to do yet other than fight, but more will be added. If you find nice people to roleplay with it can be a lot of fun.

If you want to know more about one of the games, just let me know. The majority of them are cutesy, since that is what I prefer in mmorpgs.

MMORPG =! doujin maker

I remember some years ago in the recruitment page of doujin group French Bread, maker of EFZ, Melty Blood and now Scarlet Weather Rapsody :
- Someone who can pixel draw
- Someone who can have his mouth shut on secret project
- Someone who don't play mmorpg

It was of course half of a joke (I think the leader was playing a bit FFO), but mmorpg is an enormous timesink and completely destroy creativity. Once you gotten into one, you can be sure that your project will be delayed until you quit.
There are of course causual mmorpg, as well as causual mmog such as fps, but there is always an addictive effect that will draw you in again until you completely remove them from your computer.

Mmorpg played until I had enough will to move on VN project :
- ROHAN online : lineage-like game, grind/kill mob type, quite good on graphics (if you like elf/dark elf/gothic theme as usual), quite hard to play since japanese only (was supposed to have an english beta around now though).

- Perfect World : World of Warcraft-like, but chinese world oriented. Very easy to play, leveling is easy too and quest/grind/kill mob oriented. There is an official english server and english client.

Both are Free 2 Play games, that mean playing is free but you can buy additional content. You can't buy on japanese server if you are a foreigner though, you can buy with RM currency on PW with Paypal.

That depends on the project, though - I've been playing one for a couple of months during the time I've been making TeraMura. ^^; I always told my party that "oh my, the clock is too much, I have to go to write now" - fortunetly, they always dealed with it well. :) Actually, it was a good thing for me in a way, because my greatest inspirations are always at night, and while playing a MMORPG game, the time passes quite quickly at times, so when I played until I thought it's about the time I should be sleeping already, by making myself write after quitting the game I could always get a good inspiration on those nights. Ahh, just thinking about it makes me want to be on summer holiday already! :D

That really looks cute, yes ^^ I have a weakness for 2D! Maybe I should check this one out.

I played a lot of Ragnarok Online 1 a few years back, and now I play Ragnarok Online 2.

You cans see some videos of me playing RO2 here:
http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=tangos

But.. hmm.. RO2 is a koreans-only game, so it might be a little tough for you to play unless you happen to be Korean.
RO1, on the otherhand, has an english set of servers called International Ragnarok Online, or better known as iRO,
and this is where most of the "legitimate" english speaking RO players play. There's private servers too...
but I would avoid the top 20~50 servers as they usually have severely game crippling "donation gear" and class divisions like you'd never imagine.

Besides that, some other popular crack, I mean, MMO choices of many are Lineage 2... uh.. I can't remember anything else.
A friend of mine is playing a game called Dream of Mirror, which is also free, but I haven't played it myself.

Thanks for all the replies.

I have a silly question - if the game is 3D instead of 2D, doesn't that mean it'll take up more bandwidth? Since there's like, more data? If so, we should play a 2D game =).

Wow, so many people here are already playing MMOs. I had no idea. Everyone's playing a different title, though. I wonder if we can pick a game, and then play it together =D?

3D = models (lightweight) + textures (heavyweight but not *that* numerous usually)
2D = one picture for pretty much everything, animation being heavyweight usually

I'd say 2D could be heavier than 3D most of the time, but it does depend on 3D quality and the "smartness" with which things are assembled in the end.

I haven't heard of anyone not playing an MMO because it was taking up too much bandwidth ... so maybe it's safe to assume they use an amount of bandwidth that's within the range of your average user's net speed.
