Because I've never made a game before, the style will be pretty minimalistic, which will make use of my minimal programming experience and I think heighten the...admittedly dark tone. Think the aesthetics used in a 1990's-era Japanese horror adventure game, like Twilight Syndrome or St. John's Wort.
But enough of my yacking, let's talk about the project.
Genre: Psychological, bordering on personal horror. As this is a short story, its aim is to create atmosphere, hit the player, and then leave them thinking back on it after the game is turned off.
Warnings: Upon completing the initial outline, I'm going to warn that if wriggly things do not strike your fancy, do not play this. Just sayin'.
Age range: Honestly, I'm going to tentatively give this a 17+ rating due to the themes.
Story: This is also subject to change, as I do often change things drastically after I begin working on them. As of now, it centers around a woman (name unknown) who finds her bedroom leading to a spatially-impossible hallway that she's never seen before. And, to coin a phrase, hijinks ensue.
My Plan
I hope to get the story written first (obviously), and then work on the game's visual style, and then code it all together. As I've said, I'm not exactly the best programmer, so any programming advice one could give would be extremely helpful.
So the order, in a bulleted list, is:
1. Story
2. Visual Assets (Images, possibly menu design)
3. Beta Reading for quality.
4. Sound design (sound effects, music, etc)
5. Coding, and putting the game together.
6. If there's time, QA testing to fix various bugs before release.
As of right now, this game has a two-person team: I work on the story, coding, and overall planning, while my partner works with the visual assets and sound design.
This is my first real attempt at creating something like this, but maybe the time constraints will get my butt in gear and force me to finish it in a short period of time.
I'll be updating this as I do more on it, so keep track of the thread for extra updates concerning the project!
I am currently looking for someone who is interested in GUI design. The game is minimalistic, so it wouldn't need a fancy one (especially since it's mostly in NVL format; the GUI is mostly for the menus and saves). If you're interested in helping out, PM me and we can talk about things!
