Tokudaya Sprites and the Character application

So, I just recently tried to download some tokudaya sprites, but they are all in pieces. There is an application called "character" in the folder that I think will piece the parts together for you to make a more unique sprite. Unfortunately, I can not read anything in the creator, and so I have no clue how to work it. I'm pretty sure my computer can't read the Japanese characters and translate them to English. Is there some way around this? I have a windows laptop that I'm currently trying to use.

I believe they have a .psd file that you can manipulate:)

But if that doesn't work, the creator is actually really simple to use. Just click around the labels and you can see the character change. The labels are categorized by (no idea exactly but something like) eyes, mouths, noses, eyebrows, etc. You might be confused because iirc the first two label groups don't do much. I believe F6 exports the file as a .png file with a transparent background.

Note: I can't recommend Tokudaya in good faith because they were really overused a few years back, unless you're just going to use the sprites as placeholders, but YMMV.

In order for your laptop to display Japanese characters you need to change your system locale to Japanese. If you're using Windows 8 you can find it by going to Control Panel > Clock, Language and Region > Region > Click the Administrative tab > Change System Locale. A drop-down menu will appear so scroll down until you find Japanese (Japan). After that you need to restart your laptop. If it still shows weird symbols delete the entire folder and extract it again from the .rar file so the Japanese characters on the file names will appear properly.

When you open the .exe you should see something similar to this:

I've added some translation so hopefully it'll be easier to understand what some of the things are suppose to do!
You can add different eyes and expressions on the sprite by simply clicking it and you'll see the changes in the preview on the right. If you click on the name of the part twice under 'Accessory List' it'll be added into 'Display accessory' group. You can remove it by clicking it twice again.

Please note that you can only change the hair colour if you're using 髪 (色変更) under 'Hairstyle - Front' in the first tab. 00髪 under 'Accessory list' will not work.

The third tab is basically where you can change the 'Character set' which I'm assuming if it came with multiple poses? I'm only guessing here so I might be wrong!
Underneath that it has a section with information on the current character that you're using. From what I've seen they'll normally mention the height of the sprite and what kind of features (base colour of hair, eyes, etc.) they have added. Otherwise it's all miscellaneous information pertaining to that character. I don't think people checks out the third tab often which is why I didn't bother putting up an image with translations in it. ^^;

Thank you for the translations! But when I open the character application on my computer, it does not show a preview of the character, and I have tried redownloading the zip and extracting it again. :( I do use windows 8. Do I need to install anything to make the app work properly?

Thank you! I have been uploading the files to my google drive and using pixlr to manipulate the layers. I don't have photoshop, and some of the layers display weird. For example, cherry red chins when it is supposed to only be soft coloring. Is there a way to fix that outside of photoshop that you now of?

Sounds like the software you're using can't handle transparency properly. Photoshop CS2 is free, try that.

I had this problem, too.. Although mine isn't even in Japanese.
So after you design the character the way you want it, what are you supposed to do? Is there a way to save it so you can upload it to your games?

Or.. if you still confused, maybe you can take a look at the attachment :)

well, my computer isn't using any Japanesse language too and the program still working fine~ I just playing around with this program actually and use them as my placeholder

I found one completely free solution to the problem: Open the .PSD file in MediBang Paint Pro. The program is free, supports .psd files and can export as .png with a transparent background. The "corrupted" layers never showed up again like they did in Pixlr.
