A Weird Dream [Beta Test] (Weird, Short, Comedy)

#1 Post by Plotline_Progenitor » Sat Mar 05, 2016 2:59 am

A Weird Dream
Story Concept:
You fall into a deep sleep and begin on a very strange journey in the land of make believe, odd people come across your path, and who knows where your actions will take you?

Features:
-8,650 words long
-18 Endings (But most are very close together)
-A couple of choice menus
-A few NVL scenes, including one long poem
-4 different stats, each important to a certain ending
-Bonus Content on seeing all endings (Or finding one special ending)
-Un-lockable internal walk-throughs if you get stuck

About
A weird dream is just a very short, weird, comedy visual novel that I happened to make while I was practicing using Ren'Py, I decided to polish it off and make it available to the rest of you just in case it happened to amuse someone. It's really just a bunch of strange nonsense that I threw together so please don't take it too seriously

I'm brand new to the forum and there's still a lot of things I don't know how to do. So I suppose it can also serve as an example to anyone interested about the current level of my skills (Except the art, because most of that is just tracing)

Enjoy your randomness! :D

It seems so complete why is it in the testing and demo thread?
As far as I know everything should be complete and working properly but in case there's some error I hadn't spotted or which showed up after going through the internet or to other computers I thought I'd run it through here for a little while before posting it in the completed games thread, as far as I know that's what a beta test is and is part of the standard procedure here right?

Questions:
1: I've only tested this on windows, I check boxed all platforms while exporting, can anyone on mac or Linux tell me if it works or not?
2: I've seen people put the word count in their finished game threads but how do you actually count the number of words in your visual novel? Do you count code? Do you count the text on choice menus? Is there any way to do it conveniently? All I can think to do is to manually go through counting on every different ending and choice variation and that seems incredibly time consuming Solved!
3: (Practically a part of 1) how do you determine the hour count for how long a visual novel is, I've seen some people do that
4: How do I post pictures on this forum?
5: Any information/formatting/features you can think of that I should include in the completed games thread once it's ready for there would be appreciated, I get the feeling my posts don't quite meet the usual expectations here
6: Anything else you'd like to ask/say
7: Any feedback you want to make about "A Weird Dream"

The easiest way I've found to post pictures here is to upload them at a file hosting site (I use deviantart; it's free) and then link to the image.
Seven minutes for one play-through on Windows 7, 64 bit.

As I don't use ren'py I can't tell you how to count words.
All of my VNs are at http://wolflore.net NOTE: Downloads are now working.
Some are at http://www.the-new-lagoon.com. NSFW
Poorly done hand-drawn art is still poorly done art. Be a Poser (or better yet, use DAZ Studio 3D) - dare to be different.

If you're using Ren'Py, then on Ren'Py launcher screen, under Navigate Script, click on the "Check Script (Lint)" button. If your game is ready to run, that will generate a text file with your game statistics (including word count) and any error that could be found.
