Seeking some translation (to Japanese) Help

#1 Post by DinosaurDan »

Greetings All!
Not exactly which board catagory to post this in, but I hope this is the correct choice.

I'm working on a game which has some graphics that will feature both English and Japanese versions of the same word, or in this case number, and I've been trying to find a way to make the translations on-line. I've had some success with single and simple words (using Alta Vista), but I've so far found translating numbers very vexing. There is a great attempt to explain how it works on Wikipedia, but the range of numbers I desire just goes too high.

The following numbers will be used to display bids for an auction in the game:
0
10,000
30,000
50,000
65,000
80,000
100,000
120,000
150,000
250,000
400,000
500,000
700,000
900,000
1,000,000
1,300,000
1,500,000
1,800,000
2,000,000
3,500,000
5,000,000
8,000,000
11,000,000
15,000,000
23,000,000
35,000,000
42,000,000
50,000,000
80,000,000
100,000,000
500,000,000

I apologize for this list being so long.
If someone knows of a web site that can help or if someone can offer help directly, either way it would be just wonderful.
No matter what thank you for taking the time to read my request.
All the best,
Dinosaur Dan

Absolutely outstanding!
I am very impressed with the speed and willingness to help on this board. Many thanks to both F.I.A. for the posted reply and to Cybeat for the note back asking for more details and offering to help. You folks rock!
And so, a screen capture and some Photoshop later and the translated numbers will be in game art form.
Thanks again,
Dinosaur Dan

The kanji are correct, but there're some errors in the pronunciation (at least, according to what I've been taught).
10,000 > 一万(Ichi-man)
65,000 > 六万五千(Roku-man-go-sen)
1,000,000 > 百万(Hyaku-man)
11,000,000 > 千百万(Sen-hyaku-man)
15,000,000 > 千五百万(Sen-go-hyaku-man)
23,000,000 > 二千三百万(Ni-sen-san-byaku-man)
35,000,000 > 三千五百万(San-zen-go-hyaku-man)
42,000,000 > 四千二百万(Yo-sen-ni-hyaku-man)
50,000,000 > 五千万(Go-sen-man)
80,000,000 > 八千万(Hachi-sen-man)

I kind of felt that I should note that in my experience, 零(0) can be pronounced either as れい(rei) or as ゼロ(zero) depending on the preference of the speaker or their situation... I don't know the cultural emphasis on either pronounciation, but I know both exist. I hope that helps.
