I was wondering how I could make my own character sprites. I'm not sure if there is a great program or a tutorial anywhere. Thanks!

I'm assuming you don't want to use 3D characters or filtered photographs.

Character sprites in visual novels are essentially just digital art, edited to fit the screen.

So just look for digital art tutorials. Generally you will need a graphics tablet of some kind to actually draw on the computer but scanning drawings and using the mouse to trace and color them can also work.

Programs people use include Photoshop and Paint Tool SAI.

Thank you! Sorry for the late reply (ehem a year later), but I forgot to log myself in. Anyways, thank you. My only problem is I could only be able to draw using my computer because I'm broke right now, but thank you! And I also have no clue how much a scanner costs or how to get one, so that most likely won't work. Do you know any good places for free sprites?

You can find sprites in the creative commons section. Just make sure you follow the rules (:
