Flower Field [RPG] [Fantasy] [Visual Novel]

#1 Post by KeyboardSan »

I have made a Visual Novel RPG game which (I think) can be called an RPG justifiably. There is a combat system, weapons and magic system, dialogue system and you can roam about in the game world and increase your level by fighting monsters. How cool right? All this is done in Ren'py and Python.

Also, I work alone so I did not have time or motivation to do so many art so I picked art up from the internet and used iicharacter_alpha to generate characters. Also, I have taken all the music from Kevin Macleod from incompetech.com.

I hope you like my game. I have uploaded screenshots and am going to release it soon.

[update]

So, I have uploaded the full game on gamejolt.
Please download it and play. I hope you will enjoy it.

[update]
I reduced the size of the game to 115 MB.
I think now it will be slightly more affordable for everyone.
Enjoy.

I was having fun while playing the game quite a bit, but I got an error when I was about to read "note 3" in the military base in Wheel Town.
Traceback.txt is attached below:

I don't usually play RPGs, but I really like how the VN/RPG combination was played out in here.
As for the story, I haven't spent time enough to know much. Looking at the brief dialogues between Kallister and his dad, does the main conflict in the story revolve around coming-of-age drama?
Another thing to note is that just make sure to properly credit the creators for your game's assets!

I hope I can finish it without much problems soon. ^_^

Hey, thank you so much for trying the game and also for telling me about that error.
I have fixed it. It was a 'dissole' not defined thing. lol. I should be more careful next time. I have fixed it and will upload the new file soon. And, I know it must be pretty uncomfortable to download a big file again for a small error. Sorry for that.
Also, if you ignore the error you can move forward without any effect on your stats or level so you can finish the game. Although I hope you don't find any more errors in this.

I am glad you enjoyed the concept of VN/RPG. :) I want to make more of these kind in the future but with my own assets. :P And, yes I have credited the creators properly and as they wished in the credits.

Actually, you can say that it does revolve around coming of age drama. ;)

I played for around 20 minutes, and thought I had seen enough to comment a bit.
I'm going to be a little critical, but there's a lot of things you've done well too, so don't get discouraged.

Like, you've done a TERRIFIC job programming the game, with the fights, and everything. Very cool programming skills. You can definitely call this an RPG.

But the writing is not on the same level.

For example, it's very useful to have the bar on the center of the screen reminding you of what you have to do. (I know I could have used something like that when I picked an rpg after a long time without playing it!) but overly relying on it can make the game seem rather mechanic.

Let me explain:

I explored the forest because the bar on top of the screen said so.
Then, when I go talk to talk Kallister's dad (also because the bar on top of the screen told me to do it) it's revealed that he did it as training/preparation for a longer journey.
Instead of that, if the game had opened with Kallister saying "Today I will prove to Dad that I have what it takes to go on a quest!" or with a little argument between Kallister and his Dad it would have shown more personality. (I'm not saying my example is good, what I mean is that the beginning seems a little mechanic and I -personally- like more story/emotion. Give us reasons so we can feel invested.)

My criticism might have to do with personal preference, so again, don't get discouraged.
Looking forward to your next game. :)

Hey, thanks for trying my game! :)
I am glad you liked the fight mechanics. I actually had to spend a lot of time designing it.
And, yeah, the straightforward instruction do seem to make the game a little mechanic. :(
And, players can't get emotionally engaged and wouldn't want to explore the rest of the game world. :P
I will keep in mind what you said and will develop a better world and an engaging experience in my next game.

Also, your criticism only makes me stronger and better. Atleast you took the time to try my game and review it.
Thank you for that.

Hey, it took some time for me to beat the game. I can't give you any advice 'bout the story - for me it was quite ok and enought to send protagonist to his jorney. The RPG (technical) part was impressive - maps, inventory and travelling system. The tasks bar was very helpful. There were some errors, like missing images and transitions, but for one-man-army you've made an interesting game, and after all I enjoyed playing it - thanks...))
And good luck with your next projects...;)

Hey, thank you for playing my game. I am really happy that you liked the RPG mechanism. It actually took me a lot of time and thinking to put it together. :)
I tried my best to remove errors but I guess they slipped in somehow. :P Really sorry for that.
And thank you for reviewing my game, it means a lot to me.
I will begin a new RPG project soon, this time with my own assets and maybe a small team? ;)
