Recommendations for games to learn from

Hello there.

I'm getting a game together, yet I have not played too many VN's.
Most of my experience is in otome or harem (or both).

The game I am putting together is, well, fetish eroge.
So that I can see what the standard is, could someone recommend indie to top tier eroge titles?
Anything from soft to hardcore works, I mainly want to visually see how they implement current technologies.
With how the story flows and scenes are organized.

Thanks for any input!

I guess the obvious answer would probably be Katawa Shoujo. I can't say I'm familiar with any other large-scale eroge titles, though, so I won't be able to help further than that.

I don't rlly play many eroge, actually I don't play eroge XD, but accidentaly I play once and the name is 'DeIz', but I dont know if it's rlly eroge or not, I think there's ecchi stuff in there but there's no H scene :/ but it has a great story so I think u should give it a try? :/

And for the Fetish one I think there's game with the same name XD "Fetish : Every Second Count" but it's not eroge, but has something to do with fetish, maybe u should give it a try too? :/

I'm afraid I can't help you here, but I believe VNDB might be able to! You can search tags for specific fetishes, and arrange the results by order of popularity and rating. This can help you find top titles in any genre, and could prove useful to your quest. Best of luck!

I don't play eroge myself but I've worked on one: https://sugarscript.itch.io/cute-demon-crashers

It's a consent-focused, sex positive game.

Actually one of the most interesting 'eroge' scenes I've seen in a VN is in 'Cupid', in terms of seeing how they implement the eroge it may not be a really good example as it's not what I'd call eroge, but it's the best example I know in terms of story flow: the scene is actually important to the plot. Something lacking in a lot of eroge VN.

The problem with a lot of eroge for me is that these eroge scenes tend to be completely irrelevant to the rest of the story. I'm honestly quite bored when reading them because they're not really related to anything happening before or after, and I can literally just autoskip it and not miss a thing. Just mentioning the act of intercourse while the actual eroge happened off screen is usually a viable option, thus rendering the scene itself pointless. With Cupid on the other hand, it's the first scene where we FINALLY get a hint to the true nature of the mysterious Marques so it was actually interesting to read. Another example I can think of can be Homeward, their eroge wasn't as well-implemented at times but there were also scenes where it did matter.
However, I do think that you can ignore my advice, I don't really like eroge to begin with while you're most likely aiming for an audience who plays eroge for the sake of its eroge scenes.

When I read the word "fetish", cat/dog eared characters came to mind, and I recalled that there's an eroge titled "Wanko to Kuraso" to please players who'd like to pet a dog-girl. Not sure if it's within your target, but I guess you might still want to check it...

Thanks for the titles! I'll look through them one by one.

I agree with your opinion that many tend to be just for the sake of porn.
In my game I want there to be solid storytelling. I respect Clannad, H20, Akasaka, Higurashi, Otoboku... quite a bit.
There has to be balance.

As it has been mentioned before, I can't recommend Katawa Shoujo enough... Although an eroge, it isn't really focused on the eroge part of it but it IS an eroge made with Ren'Py... Not only that but it's free... It's also a really good VN so I think you should def check it out if you haven't already.

Brief disclaimer: my experience in this field comes mostly from Japanese titles. List ordered by accessibility.

- Katawa Shoujo (Ero is well integrated into plot, and if I remember correctly there's some light fetish material in it.)
- Song of Saya (You could probably learn some lessons from its writing, if it doesn't put you off eroge completely.)
- euphoria (Heavily fetish oriented, and has generally decent ero writing.)
- Wonderful Everyday ~Discontinuous Existence~ (The translation is almost impossible to find, but I'll be damned if it doesn't have some of the best writing in the genre.)

If anyone is taking anything from euphoria, it's how not to write ero dialogue:

It's more comedy gold than actual eroticism.

Admittedly, the ero in euphoria in particular is...all over the place.

The only thing I remember about half the game is "SENPAI!!! SENPAI!!! SENPAI'S MAKING ME CUM!!!!!!!!"

If anything, I suppose the ero is a lesson on how not to write hentai.

Hoshizora no Memoria

It is very shiny and pretty. It uses a technology that zooms in and out, panning and whatnot. Basically, it's very pretty. How nice it looks is the best part of the game.

There's sex here and there. Loli-sex. Outdoor sex. Beach sex (personally, I find that ugh. Because, sand). Bath sex. Incest sex. That's all coupled by stories that are moderately decently connected to each other with a good helping of fantasy and drama.

Kuraso to Wanko

For all its dog girl hype, honestly, there was a lot of sex in this game. It had a cute story with drama here and there, different types of sex, but nothing that I would consider too kinky (aside from how loli-ish the characters look). There were some threesomes, blowjobs, outdoor sex, masturbating, sex toys, but eh. In general, there was a lot of sex, and it wasn't badly written either.

Honestly, the biggest thing on the eroge is probably how much sex there was and how it somehow melded into the game pretty easily. There were a decent amount of choices here and there that seemed insignificant. Except, seeing my incomplete CG log, I'm pretty sure that those choices were basically: where to have sex. Which, that's actually great. Meaningless choices that don't affect the story are kind of annoying, but when you get ero scenes with them... well... nyehehe.

Shikkoku no Sharnoth/Seiken no Inganock

These games by Liar-soft aren't as much eroge as much as they are games that happen to have sex scenes in them. The sex itself isn't all that arousing, but the good thing is that it helps to move the plot along and build character.

The biggest reason I would recommend taking a look at the games is how the art and GUI is set up. It's beautiful and sets the scenes very well.

Katahane

Similarly, the sex scenes fit moderately well with the story. While I personally didn't have many feelings for them (too few to feel like an eroge and not being all that great), Katahane does have an unique factor to it.

It has this system where you can change POV character. I'm not sure where that would be useful in an eroge, but just a thing to think about.

Sonohana

There is lots of sex. It's also yuri. It's pretty soft. Though, there's watersports in one of them as far as I can remember.
