I actually don't mind having the links there. It's just that they should be on the Resource page, rather then linked to directly from the sidebar.
But I don't mind people linking to other game engines... I think Ren'Py stands up well in comparison. And if, for whatever reason, someone doesn't like Ren'Py... well, I'd rather they make a game using whatever tool suits them, rather then picking another hobby.
I'm now thinking I'll put a "Community" section on the sidebar, and maybe make a /community/ area on renpy.org. It could have the resource page, and other community stuff that comes up.

Err. yeah, I was trying to think of something fillup something in the resource heading rather than to have just one link on its own. Maybe your "Resources" heading can have a few subheadings on the line of "Artwork", "Programming", "Music", etc... but then again there must be enough content on each of the subheadings in order for that to work..
Or maybe change "Discuss" to "Resources", then stick in the link for resources along with the "Forums" and "Contact".

Yep, I was thinking of something along that line too. Since resources are usually the main thing that's stopping people from creating games, having a list of them will hopefully provide an impetus.
The 'programming' subheading might not be really needed, since there's already documentation on the site. Instead of 'music' something more general like 'audio' would be better I think, since that could include sound-effects, voice-acting and software etc. Plus maybe we could add one more subheading on story-writing.

The problem is, the "Discuss" section is currently about Ren'Py. This new page isn't overly about Ren'Py, so I would want to put it in a different section.

Has anyone mentioned http://www.vgmusic.com/ ?
I saw on the last page:
http://www.gamemaker.nl
It's a really good piece of kit- it can make point and click games, text adventures (If you want to), RPG's, Scrolling shooters, platform games, 3d games, and a lot more. It also has the ability for particle effects, adding effects to sounds, CD actions... I highly reccomend it. It may seem simple, but it is very complicated.

If I remember correctly, vgmusic is only a library of well made midi files from video games, so I don't think people would just use them for their game without feeling the sword of Damocles over their head. We could say it's a source of inspiration though (check out the tunes from Axelay in the SNES section, they are really good).

Pardon the newbie question, but while I understand how to use ALICE and the associated dolls, I'm not clear on how you would use the files at Daz3D unless you had a copy of Poser. Is there some tool to convert those to Photoshop standard files, or something else that can be edited with a program such as "The Gimp"?mikey wrote: Characters

One other site to consider if you're looking for free photographs is:
http://www.flickr.com
You can search there for photos that have Creative Commons Licenses. That is how some of my photos came to be used in an online travel guide (no money, but the occasional visitor...)
Hope this helps,
Ewan

DAZ3D offers its own free rendering program...not quite as fancy as Poser, but easy enough to learn if you just want to render a couple of anime girls quickly. (I think they had to offer their own program so that people who have never purchased Poser would still have an incentive to buy their commercial content.)
Grand list of things not officially canceled:
Salt -- the heartwarming story of brain-eating space worms
Tangent -- an epic poem and/or novel about a borderline-autistic Martian imp and her relationship with God
Kittens of the Darned -- a grimdark soap opera about sexy catgirls (Indefinitely postponed until I learn to draw and color realistically)
The Other Mary -- the most perfect fic about the most perfect Mary Sue EVER
Rockheart -- a short story about a monster who kills everyone
Corrupted -- a completely different short story about a monster who kills everyone (late Worst Visual Novel Ever)
Checkpoint 36a -- the transcription of a short multi-ending dream about time travel and undead schoolgirls
In Which the Princess is Kidnapped -- an entry in the "ordinary girl ends up in an alien universe and tries to save it" genre
Pictogram Scramble: Magical Friendship Bunny Ivy -- a Flash game about a magical girl making friends (Indefinitely postponed until I learn how friendship works)

If you can read Japanese (or get someone to do so for you) and abide by the terms of use, there's a lot of great resources in the doujin community for use in games, including both illustrated and photo backgrounds, sound effects, etc. Here's a good starting point:
