I looked around, and it seems like people need artists more than programmers

Ren'Py has been designed to be easy to pick up. It has a great and well maintained wiki and for support there's this forum of very helpful and friendly people, some of them programming vets.

Its only to be expected, right?

People do need programmers, but MORE people need artists.

For folks that are just trying to make a simple visual novel, or maybe even one without choices, they can get by all right without adding any fancy features... but the need for art is a lot more obvious. So more people are looking for artists than for coders.

If you make demos showing off cool custom features that you can make that aren't easy to implement, people will be more interested in your services. A lot of times people haven't tried to add a feature because they haven't even realised it's possible.

One of the whole reason I got into Renpy is because I was bad at programming and it was an easy way to make games without needing much programming experience. So I wouldn't expect a ton of people to require a programmer for their games (if they can't use Renpy they tend to gravitate towards even easier but less feature rich tools like Tyranobuilder)

I think there is a great market for programmers who will make fully functional and complex battle systems for free or almost free. I have seen people want programmers who can do very complex things, like mini games and battle systems and complex animations, and lots of Python related stuff. If you are a super advanced programmer and can do things for very little money...you may well find people wanting to work with you.
