If you dont want to officially support then just give an secret patch to us

Wouldn't FLIF be a better option if people really really wanted/needed a more versatile and efficient image compression format?
FLIF - GNU LGPL (platform) or Apache (decoder part) licence (like many libraries already bundled with Ren'Py) - Out-performs webp and bpg on all types of images.
BPG - Runs as a wrapper through HEVC so would need a licence to use patented HEVC on any device not registered to support that codec - only does better against webp on just certain image types (e.g. it is better to use webp on 3d renders which many people use nowadays ( note FLIF would be even better ) )...
Or just use the already supported WebP as the compression savings through using a new format are not huge and *most* Ren'Py games are downloaded once rather than streamed...
