WOLF3D-based game in development...

#1 Post by Megaman Z » Sat May 21, 2005 9:21 pm

I'd just like to let you know that I started yet another project. this one's in a genre I particularly like, so I'm probably going to see it through... even if I have to do all the spritework myself (which would suck. if you really wanna see the only sprite I've done so far, start sending PM's now).

pretty much, here's the story. you play as some person who's Girlfriend (unnamed as of post time) has been kidnapped during a nazi raid (why nazis? saves time doing spritework. if you are offended, I'll try and change as many of the... 200 or so sprite images as possible.) granted, there's a catch: you can't just go in, guns blazing, or else you'll get shot up real quick. also, the point is not to kill every single guard in the level. you can't. I specifically structure each level as to not allow you to kill all the guards without using cheats. so basically, you have to sneak through each floor and get to where your GF is being held hostage. (granted, there will be some times you HAVE to kill someone. namely to A)get a special key [Ep. 1, floor 1, "normal exit"], or B) to save yourself from death [there are times when you can let loose and shoot all the men down.])

progress will NOT be in my sig. until the first episode is complete (thus allowing me to release a demo version). assistance with the source code would be appreciated. a sprite artist would help, but I think I can handle the sprites on this one.

(speaking of progress, I've done the first and final levels of Episode 1 [floors 1 and 9], working on the second actual level [floor 10 doesn't count.], and I've got the ending text modified already. what I need the source code for is to change the number of levels the game recognizes and to enable the "Read This!" on the main menu for viewing the intro.)

I don't know about this...

To tell the truth I see nothing wrong with a tribute game (such as Shoujo Attack), but a ren'ai version of Wolfenstein? It will have to involve REALLY good lines (of talk) and a light-hearted approach in the indiana jones kind of way (as not to offend, which it still might) and it will be IMO a much more difficult task than any of your previous projects, although it may not seem like it at first.

Still, that's only an opinion, so go for it if you feel up to the task. But keep in mind, there was the RPG Project, TOZ, TOZ2 and now this one... you should be able to put a checkmark beside at least one of those before trying for something else (yes, I know the RPG is on hold, but still...). Don't take this the wrong way, but you should decide on one and go with that.

You said you weren't putting any progress status into your signature before a good part of the game is done, but you just announced it and now everyone knows. And we will ask questions, and about the progress and so on, and so on. There are lessons to be learned from ToL2, from MB or from FH.

I don't mean to scare you off though, if you can manage to work on several projects simultaneously, by all means go for it. Try to read through Lemma's Tips or my article. None of these claim to be the ultimate guides, but perhaps you can find something useful in them. You seem to be very active and it would be a shame to waste or misdirect creative potential. Once again, it's all well meant.

So good luck then, I'm looking forward, it's been some time since I last shot at sprites :P

okay, let's see...

I did not say it was a renai game. actually, it isn't, but there's nowhere else I know of to put this (I don't really search the web too much. )

as far as project count, I know I have now four projects going [technically three, as TOZ2 is paused until TOZSP is complete, and if the RPG doesn't count, two]. however, I don't just focus on the projects. I take breaks and relax, play games, yell at the dumb blonde on the TV because she shot the PM's bodygaurd when I said "NO!" in response to her question "is it okay to shoot?", check back here, walk around the world (Just kidding...), and a long list of other things I do (most of it isn't by choise...).

reason why I don't put this in the sig: I think that doing so would cause a whole lot of panic here and a PM surge to me. I'm waiting until I have a playable demo to place it there. (the demo would be 1 chapter long.)

(as far as the other projects, I need to contact my artists again.)

[edit: D***IT! it won't let me compile!]

Well, but maybe you still could consider putting in some ren'ai lines, I kind of enjoyed SHOGO:MAD because the two girls were competing over Sanjiro ^_^

I think I may have solved the compile problem, but I'll take it one step at a time to make sure... first would be renaming the episodes...

[yes, THAT has to be done in the source code. it's in the Wl_Menu.c file of it...]

if I'm right, only a couple features will be cut from the original design (way too lazy to make four keys work! not enough time to study FloEdit II and figure it out!). if not, expect demo releases to contain unfinished levels (which prevents you from getting at the endings on those episodes, so you would have to wait for that episode to be released...)

[update: YES! fixed at last! now I can compile the code! (for the wondering minds, the problem stemmed from someone else's instructions. the include directory didn't need changing. I was able to track this error down in a non-simulated MS-DOS environment [command prompt, not DOSBOX, which was what I was using before], and as such, I was able to remedy it. Now I need to do some fiddling... [cue evil laughing!])]

Aren't we taking on a lot of projects... I would probably concentrate on one project at a time. You probably want to finish atleast one game before starting another. Anyhow, this game sounds a bit like Metal Gears in a way. Looking forward to it!
