The 25th Hour

#1 Post by Toni » Thu Apr 01, 2010 4:42 am

So, here's a little something I've been working on for the last few days. It's a VN titled "The 25th Hour" (yeah, I know there's a film by Spike Lee with the same title, has nothing to do with it).

Plot Overview:
Normal people live through 24 hours a day. Drifters, named so because they literally drift through time, live through 25 hours a day. At 12:59.59am, they enter a parallel dimension in which any action they take has no effect on the real world. However, the landscape is a carbon copy of the real world. There are two factions within the Drifters: people who want the day to repeat (Faction 1), and those who want it to continue (Faction 2). Both factions duke it out in the parallel universe until the 25th hour ends. If Faction 1 wins, anyone who dies in the parallel universe remains living in the real world and the day starts over again. However, everyone loses their memories. If Faction 2 wins, the normal flow of time continues and those who die in the parallel world die in the real world of heart attacks. Those who join Faction 1 usually have a regret in their life; something that makes them fight for a second chance. Problem is, when they get that second chance, they lose their memories and the whole scenario replays. The actual plot goes a lot deeper and contains a total of about 7+ characters.

Main Character:
The hero of the story is named Hiro (lol). Hiro is an optimist until the day his parents and fiancée are killed in the same car accident. He cries himself to sleep that night, wishing for another chance. He wakes up at 12:59.59am and after wandering around the parallel world, he meets the leader of Faction 2. After talking with him, he meets the leader of Faction 1. The player then gets to select a faction to join. Depending on which faction is selected, there are two main story-lines. These story-lines then branch off and some converge to end with around 6 different endings. The story is a drama/action/psychological/romance story so some endings may involve the main character ending up with a girl.

Progress:
I'm planning on using posterized photos for the backgrounds so I pretty much have all the backgrounds done. I'm also halfway through writing the first of three "Chapters" of the novel. The sounds used are all public domain and I think I might add some music too (public domain as well).

Sorry, I don't have any art samples so far :(. Please mention it if you'd like to help. And please leave any comments/feedback/suggestions you may have! Here's a little (little) preview of the title screen :). Oh, and for those of you sharp enough to notice it, the bullet in the title page does not match up with the gun!! I changed it on the new title screen :).

I am a sucker for time paradoxes, time warps, parallel universes and all that stuff, so I can say you've got me hooked with your description. I want more!

Oh well... Just posted to give you my total support. ^_^ *cheers*

Sounds interesting! I'll be waiting for it!

Thanks for all the support :)!! The dev blog's up if anyone wants more frequent updates, http://25dev.blogspot.com. I will still be posting major updates and artwork on the forums as well as the dev blog. Sorry for the delay, art will be posted ASAP so look forward to that :). Other than that, story writing is going smooth; just about finished with the first of three chapters and picking up speed!

Hm, reminds me a little of Scott Westerfield's Midnighters trilogy (with the whole secret 25th hour thing). Be interesting to see your take on it.

Thanks again for all the support! Here's an update. The writing for Chapter 1 is officially done :D ! Unfortunately, the artist who I thought I would be working with (I know him personally) is either taking a really long time or completely forgot about it  . I'm going to assume the worst case scenario so now I'm stuck with no art.

If anyone would like to help or knows anyone who'd be willing to help, please let me know! If you'd like, you can also post sample art or a link to a page containing any sample art.

Besides the lack of art, progress is going good! I hope to release sometime in July (I know, it's a long time, sorry, Junior year in high school  ) but if everything goes as planned (which it usually doesn't), I might be able to release in June or even earlier. If every bad thing that could possibly happen happens (which it usually does), I might have to release at the end of July or early August. But I promise I won't make you wait until the end of the year!! Thanks again for all the words of encouragement and interest!

I will continue to post major updates on the forums but if you'd like more frequent updates, please read and/or subscribe to the dev blog. The link is in my sig. Thanks!

Ack, double-post :(.

Well, for those of you patiently awaiting the art. Here's a little sample that may or may not go into the game depending on your reactions to it  .
art.png
Luckily, the artist I was working with got in touch with me and confirmed that he was working on the art. He's a little busy the next two weeks, same here (AP testing, for those who know or care  ). But after the next two weeks, I'm pretty much liberated from school (although technically, there's still a month or two left)!!! So in two weeks, a lot of work is going to get done!

But anyways, more about the art. I decided that as a VN enthusiast, I should try my hand at art and be able to draw my own sprites in case I can't find an artist. So I spent two hours (yeah, I'm a beginner XP) working on the art attached. The first is the first ever manga-style character I've ever attempted (keyword: attempted), and the second was my second go at the first. I'm pretty surprised that the second one turned out pretty OK. Any comments/suggestions on the art is greatly appreciated!

Oh, and the art was done with pencil and marker. I don't have a tablet yet but I'm thinking of buying one in the near future.
