As for me, I try to express something with my games. And I look for a way to do it within the limits of a short fan-made ren'ai game.

So far, I have not had any problems or regrets with this. I was actually able to do it within those games. And I cannot see anything right now that I wouldn't be able to give the form of a short ren'ai game.

So whatever I really want to express, I can do right now. There is no point for me in doing a bigger game.

Unless, it would be just for the sake of making the "biggest" game, or the first "pro-style" title, or impress someome, or prove something. I'll gladly leave that to someone else. I really feel good with my little on-demand team that supports the project rather than collaborates on it.

So it really seems to me that a huge collaborative effort will have too many drawbacks. Apart from the organization Grey mentioned, it would most probably be a work of compromise, which is great for high profile doujin titles or commercial releases, but it wouldn't make me happy working on it, just like it didn't really make me happy to work in a game making company. It simply sounds much better than it is.

Well then...I guess I can stop wondering about it and go work on something useful.
Grand list of things not officially canceled:
Salt -- the heartwarming story of brain-eating space worms
Tangent -- an epic poem and/or novel about a borderline-autistic Martian imp and her relationship with God
Kittens of the Darned -- a grimdark soap opera about sexy catgirls (Indefinitely postponed until I learn to draw and color realistically)
The Other Mary -- the most perfect fic about the most perfect Mary Sue EVER
Rockheart -- a short story about a monster who kills everyone
Corrupted -- a completely different short story about a monster who kills everyone (late Worst Visual Novel Ever)
Checkpoint 36a -- the transcription of a short multi-ending dream about time travel and undead schoolgirls
In Which the Princess is Kidnapped -- an entry in the "ordinary girl ends up in an alien universe and tries to save it" genre
Pictogram Scramble: Magical Friendship Bunny Ivy -- a Flash game about a magical girl making friends (Indefinitely postponed until I learn how friendship works)

I didn't mean it to sound harsh though. I spoke for myself and to tell the truth I'm not really the type to do that. I'm thinking if it ever will be done, a big project in general, it will probably be made by a new team, rather than from people who have their working ways established. But one can never know. I may be wrong. *goes to make self some tea* I'm really cold today :(

A question here: is it ok if I don't use layers but simply apply the cutout filter, smart blur and gaussian blur on the background layer? For some reason I cant seem to get layers to work correctly with my copy of Photoshop.

Sounds ok, except that you won't be able to apply the layer modes (Lighten and Darken). Which version do you use ?

Edit : Actually now that I think about it, you'll also lose the opacity effects... Yea hm... I think it won't give the wanted result then :/...

I'm using version 8.0. Somehow, after I duplicate the 3 layers, the cutout and smart blur effects dont show up. No problems with gaussian blur though.

The thing is, as you duplicate them, each layer stays opaque, which means you just won't see anything through it. Hence why being able to set the above ones (gblur and smart blur) to Darken and Lighten respectively, lets them be processed with the cutout layer. And what you see becomes a mix of those 3.
I'm using v7, so I'm pretty sure you can do the same stuff :). Try to check for an "opacity" value in the layer panel, if you lower it, you'll see through this layer. But really, the most important here is to find the layer blend modes :

If it's really needed, I'll make one of those visual tutorials that run with Flash.
