hi everyone, I'm trying to get back into art so I can start experimenting w some designs for a future game. not into very polished, hyperrealistic styles; my fav art in a VN is from the CAGE games (especially the first one)(even though people were calling it ugly smhh)

my question is if anyone has tips on how to get a similar kind of grungy vibe, if that makes sense :) or maybe point out some characteristics, I really suck at reading things like that

thank you v much for reading

So I am looking at the art of cage games and that is not hyper realistic, so I'm a bit confused. Its a typical anime style. I can also see why people would call it "ugly". The proportions and angles are hyper stylized. Very pointy chins, mouths a bit too big, and lanky proportions.

However, if you are trying to mimic the style, I can give you style tips but not drawing advice. For drawing, its always about going to the basics.
For the style, it looks mostly shaded using greys on a multiply layer. The shadows are dark and roughly blurred on clothing and body, but kept sharp on hair and face. This gives a higher contrast to the base colors Highlights are not used. It looks like they use a thin pen, adding line weight with multiple strokes in the hair, and chin, and around the eyes, but not the rest of the body. Each character also has a bit of a background low opacity blur which adds to that style.

They do a lot of quick rough strokes around the corners of the eyes, and I feel the distorted perspective adds to that grungy vibe.

those games are very important to me and the wonkiness is weirdly charming :)
