[SOLVED] Cell Shading

#1 Post by Jaye »

So I'm actually attempting to draw/colour my own characters. I've decided on cellshading cause I figured it suited the medium more. I already have rough designs of my main characters and little pixel designs of my characters so I know what they look like and how they're coloured.

New question:

Has anyone got any idea about cell shading waffle pants?

Um, waffle pants are like checkered pants except all the 'lines' between the squares are raised (making a checkerboard of indented squares over the pants). The pants are one base colour.

Anyone?

THE FLUFFINESS HAS BEEN SOLVED

Then I get to my fluffy haired character.
Now this character has caused me grief since day one of drawing. I've already had to re-do his 'do with the original designs in front of me (where as I could do the others off-by-heart).
So here's my basic question:
Does anyone know how to cell-shade fluffiness?
(ie. His hair is meant to look a lot like sheep fleace. Also, his jacket is furlined and shows it.)

You could try emulating Nia from Gurren Lagann. Her hair's pretty fluffy and looks a lot like a cloud, but still only uses two colours.

Wow, that's rather fluffy, yep that looks like it'll help a lot. Thanks!

I wonder if that'll work for the jacket...

Three colors, Samu. One extra for the highlight on top. ;P

*Nitpick*

Ah, but the fluffy bit only has two, Blue Sky. :)

Thanks so very much! That helped so much. He looks much fluffier now. :D

A second request (which I'll edit the OP with):

Anyone have any ideas/examples of waffle pants with cell shading?

Looks good, ironically enough it's the tops that I think will help more. (Especially the vest of that guy in the center).

I'll post again after I've tried it.

You can achieve similiar look with photoshop for example, using textures and gradients overlapping them. Similiar like with png for the novel sprites - firstly you apply a texture to the desired area and then transculency on different layers. You may achieve the same effect and achieve it through many ways - applying masks or using/changing layer styles. I don't know what program are you using, but such cg's are the easiest to make in Photoshop, as far as I can remember you can make from version 6.

Thanks IceD, Photoshop was how I originally made the 'waffle' pattern I wanted to use. But now I am using GIMP. Besides, Photoshop blurs a lot - not so ideal for cell shading. Thanks anyway.

And a big thank you to Samu-kun! That picture helped a lot.
