Ar tonelico: An Ordinary Life

#1 Post by wizzardx » Mon Sep 20, 2010 4:27 pm

I didn't want to post this here before, because it uses ripped JRPG game resources.

Anyway, this is an in-progress Ar tonelico fan game. The storyline is school life/adventure/comedy/fantasy, and follows a fan fic (by the same name), by Dexas. Also I received help from people on an Ar tonelico fan forum.

Here's the title screen:

Image

Here's the game download link:

http://wizzardx.isisview.org/uploads/at ... ryLife.zip

More info about the game over here:
http://artonelico.isisview.org/wiki/ind ... sual_Novel

And, more info about the fanfic (that the game is based on), over here:
http://artonelico.isisview.org/wiki/ind ... inary_Life

Also, this is the first Ren'Py game I've made so far, so it's probably nothing too special. If parts of it look nice, it's mostly due to the story, and the ripped game music, images, etc.

The game is still a work in progress (hopefully I'll be able to continue it sometime), but the first 6 chapters (out of about 70 or so ^^; ) are complete.

Anyway, if you play this, please let me know what you think. Thanks :-)

Ah, sorry about that. Just about everyone in the forum I posted it to before, are Windows users (I run Linux on my PC).

But what should work, is to copy the game folder under your Ren'Py projects directory, and then launch it from the Ren'Py project launcher.

If I'm not mistaken, Ren'Py has the ability to create universal launchers these days? (including executables for all platforms, in a single game download). I'll see if I can update the zip file later to support more platforms.

Waw! Ar Tonelico fan-game! I love Ar Tonelico. Can you post some screenshot of the game?

Anyway, shouldn't this be in the Completed Games thread?

Another fan :D .

And here you go:

The game starts with the main character waking up a childhood friend.
Image

After being chased out, he goes to a nearby shop to grab lunch.
Image

He stops by the park on the way to school.
Image

Sometime later, the girl shows a mysterious power.
Image

Later on, he encounters a girl fighting against a virus-infected robot.

It's not completed yet, only 6 out of about 70+ chapters are completed. Though those 6 chapters might take you about an hour to play through (it's kinetic, no choices. Just click through it to see how the story develops).

The story is a bit slow paced, and the chapters covered so far mainly introduce the characters, but it should be somewhat entertaining if you're an Ar tonelico fan :-)

Hmm, I played through it today -- it was well done. (even if I haven't played the actual games just yet, it makes me feel like checking the Ps2 games out, at least lol.)

Would be awesome to see more chapters soonish :)
WIP: Ring av Guder - (Contemporary Fantasy VN/Dating Sim?)

What do you get when you inherit a mystical ring, meet Norse Dieties, and Werewolves, Satyrs, or Dwarves? Possibilities.

General Completion: 5% - (Still working on story plot.)
Story status: 1% (In progress of revamping)
Scripting: 1% (Prologue is about done)
Character Art: 0% (Would like to find a Bara-type Artist, but will learn to draw them myself if necessary)
BG/CG's: 0% (None so far)

Thanks for the encouragement :-)
Though it's unlikely I'll finish soon. Firstly the project is in hiatus, and secondly there's at least another 65 chapters of the fanfic left

Heh, thanks, though all the artwork is borrowed from the AT games. For that scene I did have some fun with the Ren'Py ATL commands to animate the robot segments.

Thanks, glad you liked it :-)

You should check out some YouTube gameplay videos for the AT series, they're pretty good (particularly the AT2 battles), though the most interesting portions are probably the VN sequences while exploring the heroine's minds.

Again, the project has been in hiatus for a few months, but I'd like to resume work on it at some point. Thanks for the support :-)

In case you're interested, I ported the first chapter of that VN over to Gust's own "Flash Cosmosphere" flash-based player:

http://ar-ciel.org/uploads/at_aol/web/ataol_ch01.html

The player itself is very limited (eg: has only 3 sound effects, and you can't set volumes, and the effects are very limited), but it is very nice at what it does do, which is Ar tonelico-themed web-based VNs.

I'll probably do further chapters in this system later.

Yeah, I show up now and then when I want to bug pytom or the others with some crackpot ideas :P.

Anyhow, here's the web version of chapter 2:

Forgot to update here for a while: I've ported 2 more chapters over to the web VN system. And also I did a bunch of other short Ar tonelico-related web-based VNs.

There's a wiki article listing them over here.

And for what it's worth, I'm also currently taking requests for making further short AT-related VNs, if you have any ideas for a quick scene or two between the AT characters :-)

(short VNs for other settings are fine too, to put into this web-based format - but I'd need to get character artwork. And of course the relevant dialog to put in the VN).

Haha - that's Krusche from Ar tonelico 1, but she does look a bit like (and share some things in common with) Kallen from Code Geass :-)

Also, I put a few screen captures up on that wiki page, but here are a few select ones:

From the "An Ordinary Life" VN, chapter 3:
Image

That guy's pretty evil, both in the original game, and in this fic.

From my recreation of the opening scene of Ar tonelico 1:
Image

Another recreation - one of the funny scenes from Ar tonelico 2:
Image

This one is Ar tonelico 3-related. It's from the first track of the Tilia side of a Drama CD English fan translation:
Image

And this one is from a short funny sketch created by a member of another forum:
Image

Well basically, that's what the web-based VNs look like that I've been working on recently :-)

PS: It would be nicer to have spoiler tags that you can click to expand - that's also good for posting images or walls of text, without using up massive amounts of screen space for people skimming over the topic :<.
