Unveiled! Drifting Leaves intro

#1 Post by gekiganwing » Fri Dec 02, 2005 9:10 am

Hello all. I had talked about releasing my "super secret fall 2005" project back in early November. But then I got sidetracked, and the whole month was one long "uguu..."

And so I'm finally mentioning my end of 2005/early 06 simulation: Drifting Leaves. Find the first scene in a zip file on my new site at http://www.visualnovels.com.

I will continue to work on more scenes this month. And try to reduce my stress.

Thanks. Will try to reply soon.

Nice site gekiganwing! It's definitely something to keep an eye on. Some comments: for some of the sections like the Insights and Recommendations, I suggest putting the titles in bold so they're easier to read (i.e. they stand out better amongst all the other text). Also, not that I don't mind the links but I think you're confusing my site (renaigames.net) with the archives (renai.us)... :)

Anyways, I'll try to check out your game this month but I'm fairly busy atm so... maybe next year. ^^

Yes, the site needs work...

...and I keep forgetting about renai.us.

Right now I'm making sure I know how to insert events, using the DSE engine's default game as an example. And once that works, I'm going to start assembling each chara's story piece by piece.

One suggestion I have is to make the first day special, and to move it outside of the usual day-planner structure. It doesn't really make sense to ask the user which club they want to visit before (in the story) they learn what the clubs are.

I also strongly suggest upgrading from Ren'Py 4.8.6. There's a bug in older version of Ren'Py that prevented them from running on certain Windows XP boxes. This bug was fixed in the 5.0 or 5.1 timeframe.

One of the last major corrections I made was moving the introduction scene so that the player would see it before having to make any choices. So if that isn't true in my demo, then I might've uploaded a slightly outdated file. Will have to make sure the 0.1 version actually works...

Lemma >>> Newer versions of Ren'Py fix that bug.

Gekiganwing >>> In the version I downloaded, I show there being a 3 or so line introduction, a choice screen, and then a big tour of the school. I suggest that the tour be placed before the first choice screen.

Thread was dead

#8 Post by gekiganwing » Thu May 25, 2006 9:06 am

I didn't quite get Drifting Leaves done by the end of Nanoreno, but I've tried to finish it ever since then. Unfortunately, it's still on my hard drive right now, and still not quite complete. I've neglected it for over a month.

So in order to get this thing finished (because I want to move on), I'm going to set a new deadline for myself. I'm going to at least partially finish my game by June 6.

EDIT on June 6: after several days of procrastination ("I don't want to think about this story again") I finally started working on finishing my project. I'm revising my ALICE images now, and I've been able to add a Tiredness statistic. The most difficult part - testing out the game so that I know how long it'll take before the main character gets too tired - is the next major step.

Will think about my next major deadline today.

Waving a white flag

#9 Post by gekiganwing » Fri Jul 14, 2006 3:57 pm

This project, after a few months of work, has been almost dead for the last six weeks. It's my fault.

That said, I have two options:

1. Ask for in-depth help, so I can get the "four kinetic novels in one" and the DSE versions tested.

2. Rebuild this from the ground up, using a system (such as RMXP) that I understand better.

I'll check for replies in a day or two.

Hmmmmmm......

I can't really help as far as the first goes - I'm not much on programming - but I know there are some here that would be willing to help you out, gekiganwing. And as far as the timeline goes...there are games that have taken far longer to complete, and they are successful. Have some faith in yourself :)
