Free Artist (Closed)

#1 Post by JadeOokami » Thu Jan 27, 2011 12:09 am

EDIT: (Now closed since I've gotten a few projects to work on. When I finish them and have more free time, I'll edit this page again to show it)
I've got some free time again, and now that I've learned some more about this community and whatnot, I thought I would update this page in case anyone's interested.

So! My main function is as an artist. A SPRITE artist. But drawing sprites isn't the only thing I can do, in case anyone likes to recruit those who can fulfill multiple positions.
What I can do:
- Character sprites (Man, woman, hybrids, whatever)
- Coloring (Cell shading seems most popular, but it depends on what you want, I suppose)
- Linearting (I have recently gotten Sai through a friend, as has been recommended to me. I don't mind using Sai to lineart for you, OR I can just use the Photoshop pen tool if you prefer that look instead).
- Proofread (Provided it is in English. I can check for spelling errors, plot-holes, provide feedback and give ideas (Or point out something that might sound better written another way.))

What I can Kind Of do:
- I can do CG's, if you really want, but they'll probably be the last thing done after all the sprites are done
- Writing. I'm pretty good at it (As far as I know...)
- BG's (I generally hate these, I'll admit. If someone tries to recruit me for them, I'll warn you: I won't color them. I'll attempt to draw it/them, but coloring a BG isn't one of my forte's.)
- Ren'py Programming (I can't do super fancy things, but I have some knowledge.)

My requirements/Boundaries:

- You've started the script and are fairly committed to it getting done. If it DOESN'T get done, I'll probably donate whatever work I've done for you so that anyone else can use them, if they want to.
- I get credit for anything/everything I do (Obvious, I think, but it's probably safer to just say everything outright, just in case).
- I don't require payment unless it's a commercial game.
- I'll admit I do like dating sims. My favorite genre's are probably fantasy, action/adventure, and sometimes romance. No historicals please.
- I don't care about whether it's yaoi, yuri, hetero, or whatever. The only one I'll probably refuse based on those are shota/lolicon.

That's all I can think of ^^; I guess anything else is open for discussion. I'm trying to use this as a chance to help me improve on the above skills as well as being able to work with others and deadlines. Both of which I'm usually good at, but improvement doesn't hurt.
So! Thanks for reading!

I have a question for you; what do you use to line art your work?

I use Photoshop CS2. The pen tool.

I do have a tablet, but I find that it actually takes me longer to line that way (And it's harder, I think)

May I suggest using paint tool SAI? You have a really good start as far as outlining, but SAI has a very easy to use pressure tool that will let you taper off and thicken ends and edges here and there, and once you've played with it a little I think you could come out with some fabulous lineart. :)

(And for SAI as well, the tablet takes much longer. Use yo' mouse!)

I don't suggest using mouse, unless you like to develop Carpal Tunnel Syndrome like me.
I personally prefer the traditional hand drawn inking, but I know some people prefer digital ones.

Well, she already does the digital style, I was just suggesting an easy way to make it fabulous. :)

I've heard of Sai a lot - but I don't think it's a free program, right? I can't really afford to go buy it ^^; If it is, though, I'll definitely look into it. Using the tablet to line in PS is kind of tough, and the lines the pen tool makes does get boring after a while, haha.

I use to hand ink things also! But I mess up too often and my lines done look all that neat or clean. So after a while I kind of stopped doing that.

But thanks for the suggestions!

SAI, though is not free, but is very cheap (especially when compared to other commercial software). It's very good at what it does, it's not a resource hog like Photoshop either. If I'm not mistaken, the price is about US$50. It should be pretty cheap for you who lives in developed country like US or Japan.

For lineart, you couldn't go wrong with SAI...

Well, I don't think where I live matters too much - I'm what you would call poor. Not to mention some... unfortunate events that have happened recently to my family, so really, just about anything is too expensive for me ^^;
But yes, I've heard that SAI is good for linearting. I'll still look into it. Thanks for the recommendation, either way!

Ooh, I like your art.

I'd like to work with you, if you're willing. I don't have a WIP thread yet, but I can PM you with the story if you want (PM, because I don't want to get off-topic with your thread or anything, unless you don't mind it).

Two things, though: I'm just starting to learn Ren'Py (I'm more familiar with Novelty, but want to use Ren'Py for this), and the script isn't finished. Though I do plan on learning the former, and the script has a *bit* to go before it's finished, so there's time for me to do that. On the other hand, because of this, I don't have any set deadlines, so you could work at a relatively leisurely pace with the art without worrying about having to rush or something.

Glad you like it!
Leisurely paces are definitely nice, haha. As long as you're pretty determined to finish, I don't mind too much that they aren't done yet. PMing me the story would be fine with me.

Oh, I'm determined to finish it. As much as I've already written for it, I'm not going to quit now. That and some people at the Novelty forums would hurt me if I did, lol.

And I'll send you the PM in a bit.

Edit: PM sent!

Yay free artist. I would like a sprite(s). How many do you have time for at the moment? What is your standard sprite elements, for example how many emotions do you etc?

Some things you need to know:
This game is in the very development stages, so it'll probably be a very long time before it's out. So same as Mink above, there are pretty much zero deadlines, although I may pm you every now and again for example just to see if you're working on them already.

I have 2 other sprites for this game being made by another artist, so I'd like to first find out if you think you could sorta match that style. From your work I think you'd be able to, but it will be up to you. :)

Lastly, it'll take me a few days to write up proper character descriptions.

I never really thought about making a standard, I usually just do whatever they need. Sometimes they only want just four or five basic emotions (happy, sad, surprised, angry) and I usually make sure there's two of each emotion (That is, one with an open mouth for talking, and one with a closed mouth). I'm rather flexible in terms of emotion faces.
I'd prefer to keep the number of poses/outfit changes as small as possible though, tbh, though I can discuss those too. How many I can do depends on how many you want. Of course, the more you want, the more time it'll take to make.

As long as you really want to try and complete it, it's alright. PMing me is just fine, haha. Just to make sure I don't get too far behind or anything like that.
I would have to see an example of the sprites before I could tell you whether or not I could copy the style.

That's fine. I guess you can just PM me when you have them written, and then we could talk about further details and whatnot?
