Need help with cell shading on clothes!
Need help with cell shading on clothes!
I'm still learning how to do cell shading (seems easier then normal shading) and can do them pretty well on naked or skin tight clothing. But I'm at lost on how the fold of clothing go and how to cell shade clothes. Anybody able to give me some pointers by red lining it or by words? I left the clothes with lines so I can make adjustment easier.
Thanks in advance!
Thanks in advance!

I have some advice on the lines too-- if you can, try to color your lines so it matches the object. For instance, the shirt is purple, try coloring the lines of the shirt a darker hue of purple and so on. Unless you're planning to make the lines all black instead?

Just don't forget. The purpose to shade your art is to give depth into your art (make it looks 3D). If your art still doesn't look so 3D, you shade it wrong. I hope this tip could help. Oh, and don't forget direction of light source.

Thanks for taking your time for pink lines Machinist. I think I have a better concept of how shading around the knees and armpit area works now. It was really helpful.
The lines won't be gray for the purple shirt in the end, it's just easier for me to see that way as I adjust folds and clothing. My eyes aren't good and I find this easier for my eyes.
Pop out 3-D and lighting. Got it!
Thanks for the inputs guys

Need help again with cell shading AGAIN. Please go ahead and ink up the big guy. I had no idea how frustrating shading is until now. Could someone link me to an artist who specializes in cell shading? Or link a good tutorial on cell shading? All I can do is get the face to look somewhat right.
Thanks in advance guys

again i'm no expert either but here's what i would do...
since you colored the face darker from right side you should color the right side darker i think
(light is coming from the character's back)
btw deji has some great tutorials on her site including cellshading

Thank you guys! I'm really tempted to just use the ones you guys have done (both have nice points that I like). But I'll never learn or grow that way.
Once again thanks for helping me!

Thank you for showing me one about light source Yonyonyon, more examples are always better for me to learn from.
I thought a light source behind a guy will make him look tall and intimidating, didn't know if it worked or not. If it causes him to look too shadowed with the other sprites I may have to change the lighting.Don't forget about light source

Perhaps this might help. http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=§i ... g#/d2fwg7s Once you start to figure out where the folds are, it's pretty easy to get the shading down. (Or you could do what I do and just draw the folds in with a darker colour and cal that shading, lol.)

Thanks for the link, I like the one on the how the flow of the folds work. You also called it, I add lines and tried to pass it off as shadows lol.
Hey Yonyonyon, the 2nd one is a lot more compatible with the other sprites, you guys are all really good at shadowing the pants. I tend to get a little shy about shading the crotch area but I should really learn to grow up.
