I decided I was in desperate need for sketch practice and study since I felt like I was getting really stiff and wasn’t achieving a certain amount of grace in sketching that I wanted.
So I started exercising by drawing stills from a DVD. The aim isn’t to do something accurate or even good, it’s to improve hand eye co-ordination, speed, fluidity and basic observation of form and line. It’s also good for me to get back into traditional work since I’ve been working almost exclusively digitally for a long time. It started off with a study of huge hairy men and ended up a study of the dorky faces Hiccup pulls.
And HTTYD1 because oh boy do I have an obsession at the moment so this helps to not only stay motivated but also as an outlet for my many emotions on the subject of dragons.
Took a break from work for a change and did a little drawing for the first time in a long time. Just a super quick sketch to loosen up and see where I'm at. I feel like I've forgotten how to draw entirely. ;_;

Figured I'd try a slightly modified shading style. Still cel-shaded, but more dynamic than previous attempts.

The best reason to get up in the morning is to outdo yourself: to do it better than you've ever done it before. But if you haven't done it better by nightfall... look at your globe and pick a spot: it's always morning somewhere.
Have finally tried working on a specific character's design... I think i have his hair figured out x_x. For some reason when I'm working on a first design, I start in chibi-form lol.
First image was completely done in Manga Studio 5 and the second image was painted over in SAI so I can show how much more fluid I felt the latter program was. I'm just more used to SAI's painting tools I guess!
