Game Dev Story (Apple iOS)
Last month, a company called Kairosoft created an iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad game called "Game Dev Story." I heard about a week or two later thanks to the Indie Game Blog, and bought it on iTunes US for $4. A couple weeks (and some computer problems) later, I finally synced it up with my iPod Touch... and liked it almost immediately.
In Game Dev Story, the player is in charge of a video game company, and whether it will succeed or fail over the next twenty years. It's essentially a business simulation, as there's a lot of variables to consider...
* Who to hire, and then maintaining the staff
* What systems to publish games on
* What sort of games to make
* How to develop games
* How to advertise
* Attending trade shows
* Good and bad reviews
Overall, I found the gameplay slightly easy. It took me a few times to figure out how to get started without going over budget, but after a little trial and error, my fictional company was doing well. Not enough to create its own system or win best game of the year, but still... In any case, I was okay with the relatively low challenge. Next time, I can challenge myself and release unpopular games, and maybe ship them before all the bugs are gone.
This isn't a realistic simulation, but I found it quite entertaining. There's a small grammar error here and there, but the English writing is quite good. There are clean 2D graphics that resemble a SNES game. And I found some of the sound effects appealing, though the music is forgettable.
Kairosoft's English page is at http://kairopark.jp/iphone/en/ If you explore the site (mostly in Japanese), you'll see the company has created at least a few similar games for Windows.

Heh. iPhones look so awesome, but they're also expensive. 400-600 dollars for a phone.Elemental-Butterfly wrote:Yay! lol, now i want it too.Robert Kirkland wrote:This is why I want an iPhone.
Oh well, considering all of the features it has, I guess that's a good price.
