While searching rpgmaker.net earlier this evening for the first time in months, I stumbled across this work in progress. I was pleasantly surprised to see the first line describe it as "...a visual novel with RPG gameplay elements included, quite reminiscent of Sega’s Sakura Wars (Taisen) games." If you continue to read the plans at http://rpgmaker.net/games/4175, you'll see that the creator promises psychic characters, mech combat, exploration, and multiple endings. This is the sort of freeware or indie game that I've been quietly hoping to see...

Potential problems so far: the upper left screenshot has a character sprite that's definitely from Navel's visual novel Shuffle. Also, there is always the chance that the creator could lose interest, get too busy, and so on.
