Re: Photo BG Reference and a Little Story (...Rant)
Well, I have read of those bgs being based on real life places as well. This is indeed a great way to make backgrounds, unless your game is not of current timeline(:cough: Winter Shard :cough:).
From a nice house, a nice room, kitchen, bathtub.

also, when unable to transition into the next scene, why not do a shot of... an electrical post?
Re: Photo BG Reference and a Little Story (...Rant)
Awesome! Now many future visual novels will be based in our beautiful country
I am glad you are in a good mood even after the towing.
I think it is Makoto Shinkai who can be credited with the lamp-post / trains and over-saturated light effects (such as seen in Kanon 2006). Before his debut, very few anime tried to do the super-realism thing.
It really is tempting to take the backgrounds you've got and make a Shinkai-esque opening out of them... well, after overlaying them with craploads of lens flares first
But if I could give a warning, though. This approach was how I planned Hardcastle and Cromwell, and what turned out not-so-good was that, being an adventure story, I found that it is being severely constrained by the places to visit and the things to do. Well, technically, yes, it is a "road-trip" story, but I also wanted to get out of that road trip mentality, and be slightly different from similar stories such as Narcissu.
So perhaps you could rearrange these photos and identify which could be grouped together to represent a particular area, then confine your story and characters into running around in that area. That way, you can be more efficient.

I did the same thing when I went to stay at my grandmother's retirement home. I swear to God, the place looked like a dorm building from the front. XD I have a lot of pictures for BG reference ! Thanks for sharing these!

Wow, neat! Great resource, and it's so interesting to see pictures of someplace I've never been. Thank you!
(Only problem is, to do that tracing background thing, I'm pretty sure you have to be able to draw straight lines. I'm still working on that. Oh, and sorry about your car!)

Wow...this thread gives me an overwhelming sense of nostalgia. It's been awhile since I was last in the Philippines. I'll be taking some of these for reference. >.>

(As it goes, while Shinkai is great and all, they did do the staring-at-electrical-equipment thing in anime such as Serial Experiments Lain or KareKano well before Voices of a Distant Star appeared and propelled him and his style to fame. Watching The Place Promised In Our Early Days again recently, I was struck at how similar to Lain the presentation was in some ways. Hell, it's been a while since I last watched it, but I'm fairly sure there's elements of it in Evangelion, even, and that's hardly a niche title.)DaFool wrote: I think it is Makoto Shinkai who can be credited with the lamp-post / trains and over-saturated light effects (such as seen in Kanon 2006). You know, I feel like I've been to that mall before...
I was in the Philippines last December-January-ish, so it's pretty fresh in my mind.
I think I would just make a small KN for the sake of using the pictures >D; You could make an interesting story out of it.
