Care to clue in what this story may entail or what kind of tone you're trying to convey? That should influence character design I'd imagine.

Well basically it's a corrupted heaven and a Angel, not the fallen angel, from it leaving. This angel then goes to middleearth, which in this case is called Midgard. He finds out that the heavens are having a game with hell seeing who can wipe out the Midgard first. He then unites all the factions of Midgard, Dwarfs, Elves, Humans, Magicians together and assults both. Not giving to much away, but thats the basics.

Will this be a free game? You may try your luck posting on the "jobs" forum in DeviantART. I hope you can find an artist for free, but it is admittedly difficult.
Full credit on a free game is limited but if you promise to make a website around your game with additional links to the artist, even a webpage about them... and/or promote your game on review sites, they may be more apt to do art work for recognition. It depends on how seriously you take your game.
If you really need original art and are indeed serious about your game you may want to offer a commission price for the work.
If your game is just for fun, then I recommend getting some books or doing some online tutorials to get some basic drawing/coloring ability and throw the game together yourself. Even if the art sucks, it's ok. Once you have a completed game and you release it to the community, I think an artist that enjoyed playing it may be inspired to re-draw your art for free.
Just some suggestions, but I hope you find an artist.
I might actually do some stuff for this project. Is there any particular ways you'd want these characters depicted? Describe what best would fit your mental image of them in terms of both appearance and personality. Personality goes a long way in character art.

Sorry guys, somethings come up in my family and the project is going to be put on a temporary if not permanent hold. So don't waste the effort of making character art for now. I might dismiss this project so if the storyline enticed anyone then go ahead and use it. Once again sorry.
