So, how to make facial hair not look strange in anime style characters? (samples?)
I'm talking about the ones that are supposed to be attractive (the guys in an otome, for example).

I find this VERY attractive <3 http://hachimitsuanimeblog.files.wordpr ... -15-59.jpg
So I think solid shapes can work well. Light strokes as well, even though technically that's not how facial hair works. Basically the idea is to abstract it since being too realistic on a stylistic figure is probably going to look off.

I have struggled with facial hair for a long time, too... I find mustaches are harder to add gracefully than beards. My advice would be to look at a bunch of different pictures of anime facial hair and determine what you like. Going too simple can make hair look... Not like hair. See this from Zero no Tsukaima:
On the other hand, the level of simplicity you can get away with depends on your art style. This beard from Cowboy Beebop doesn't have much more detail than the pic above, but it looks good with the art:
Here are some good full beards that I found:
And some lighter facial hair:
General rules I've found:
-You can go super simple when making very small patches of facial hair, like a goatee.
-General places where you need to put more detail are: sideburns, jawline, and chin.
-Make the facial hair match the head hair in texture. They can be different colors, but if they have different texture it looks bad.
-For stubble, lines work just fine. Personally, I'm not a fan of the "make the skin light blue and put dots on it" approach.

Know I shouldn't probably be posting on this since it's getting old but....daikiraikimi wrote:[/url]
is that Gendo Ikari with a god-damn moustache?
Who ever though that was a good idea is clearly either mad or a genius (or both?)
