The short answer is "wherever you like"; to my knowledge Ren'Py works fine regardless of where you unzip it to. Personally I tend to leave it under "c:\games\renpy-x.y.z", but that's mostly 'cause I'm lazy. ;-)

I seem to recall some trouble under Linux recently starting Ren'Py when there were spaces in a parent directory name, but certainly under Windows this doesn't seem to cause a problem.

That seems to be the case. I put it in "D:\Game Programming\Ren'Py" and it works without a hitch.
